Youth, Place, and Theories of Belonging (Habib, S. & Ward, M., 2020)

This edited collection offers a broad set of perspectives on the forces that shape the self-stated “anxious politics” of belonging in the contemporary globalized world. The chapters, which come from authors around the world, explore how these forces are felt in particularly ways by young people. The book asserts that while in youth studies, belonging has traditionally been understood through discursive dimensions, it is important in contemporary culture to approach it also as a set of situated, negotiated practices that are always relational, and sociomaterial as well as human to human. Belonging is framed, overall, as a form of labour which produces and reproduces the world in which it functions.
