The First Decade of the Community of Inquiry Framework: A Retrospective (Garrison, Anderson, & Archer, 2010)

This reflective paper overviews how the foundational Community of Inquiry (CoI) Framework was developed at the turn of the millennium, explicitly outlining the methodology used to develop this influential framework for engaged online learning. Belonging is identified as a factor in the social presence element of the three part CoI framework, but the paper is clear that effort needed to be made to expand social presence beyond the single-dimensional experience of emotional sense of belonging, and to connect it to the teaching and learning elements of a community of inquiry. While only nominally focused on belonging, then the CoI is nonetheless a seminal framework for participatory online learning and is thus included here.
