The paper overviews the literature on the study of belonging\u00a0<em>with<\/em>\u00a0young children, focusing on early education settings. It highlights studies that have found that Othering and teacher discourses of difference have impacts on young learners\u2019 senses of belonging, as well as studies that identify space, supportive guidance strategies, and pedagogical factors that can lead to children\u2019s active agency. It notes that educational settings tend to be an introduction to the diversity of peer culture and to complex concepts of belonging, and that place-based pedagogies can connect children to social and ecological realms beyond school, elevating their perspectives on belonging.
