Its aim is to understand the role of technology in three affective outcomes of teaching – nostalgia, belonging, and mattering – during the online pivot. The findings explore ways in which technology was used to make the educational experience flexible, communal, and visible, through a ‘Digital Collegiality’ model that maps different uses of technology onto their corresponding emotional consequences. Belonging is presented as a key affective element of teaching, both academically and socially, through sustained dialogue and online interaction, production of digital content, and the ways in which sustained interaction and resulting sense of community helped to overcome hierarchy and barriers. These in turn were found to have helped to maintain the educational ‘system’ of the schools. This model suggests that technology can facilitate institutional-level collegiality by supporting feelings of mattering, belonging, and nostalgia among teachers. The article argues that a focus solely on a sense of belonging is inadequate to understand the emotional landscape arising from the use of technology during the educational emergency of the pandemic.

Bowskill, N., Hall, D., Harrogate, M., & Hutchinson, L.
