Dr. Bonnie Stewart is an educator and researcher fascinated by who we are when we’re online.
In an era of rapid change and increasing complexity, Bonnie’s work investigates the intersections of knowledge, technology, and identity for the field of education. Program Lead | Designer for Experiential Education at the University of Prince Edward Island, Bonnie examines the implications of the gig economy, the attention economy and social networks for institutions.
Bonnie’s work is centered in her capacity to help people find meaningful ways to work and think together. Based in participatory leadership models, her expertise includes digital scholarship, digital literacies, and the changing realities of contemporary higher ed. She has worked in adult and professional learning as well as online and digital pedagogy for nearly two decades. Her research foci include academic Twitter, the tensions between open and closed learning practices, and issues of equity and influence in digital networks and digital publics.
Bonnie has keynoted conferences and workshops throughout North America, and in Europe, the Middle East, and Australia. Founder and Director of Antigonish 2.0, a global project building institutional and community capacity in media literacy and civic engagement, she was involved in Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) research during its early days in Canada, and is currently part of the team coordinating PEI’s province-wide #LearnDay. Bringing the open, participatory ethos of her academic and consultancy work into her community and her classrooms is at the core of Bonnie’s practice as an educator.
Bonnie has been published in Salon.com, The Guardian UK, Inside Higher Ed, University Affairs, and Hybrid Pedagogy, as well as peer-reviewed venues, and is currently lead researcher and writer of a ten-year Cultural Strategy for the province of PEI. A proud recipient of UPEI’s 2016 Hessian Merit Award for Excellence in Teaching, Bonnie teaches courses in technologies, communications, digital pedagogy, leadership, and adult education, and leads workshops on digital strategy, digital leadership and digital pedagogies with school systems and in higher ed.
